About this release
Rhinoceros sits in the gap between engineering packages that insist on parametric history and sculpting tools that only understand meshes. It models with NURBS surfaces, which means curvature is described mathematically rather than approximated with triangles, and a shape stays exact no matter how far you zoom into it. That single decision is why the program turns up in jewellery studios, boat yards, footwear studios, architectural offices and product teams that all otherwise share nothing.
The modelling toolset is deliberately unconstrained. Curves can be drawn, projected, rebuilt, matched and blended, and surfaces can be lofted, swept, patched, network built or fitted through a point cloud. Solids are treated as closed surface sets rather than a separate species, so the same commands that trim a surface also cut a solid. Nothing forces a feature tree on you, which frustrates people arriving from parametric packages for about a week and then becomes the reason they stay.
Grasshopper ships inside the application rather than as an add on. It is a visual programming canvas where components are wired together to generate geometry, and it turns a one off model into a definition that can be driven by sliders, data or an external table. Panelling systems, structural grids, packing studies and mass customised parts all live here, and the definition updates the model in the viewport as it changes.
Translation is the other half of the job. Rhino reads and writes the exchange formats that engineering, manufacturing and visualisation all expect, including solid model formats, mesh formats, drawing formats and the point cloud formats that survey work produces. A file that arrives broken from another package can usually be repaired inside Rhino and sent on, which is why it often ends up as the office translator even in studios that model elsewhere.
What it does
- Exact NURBS geometry
- Surfaces are described mathematically, so curvature holds at any zoom level and downstream manufacturing gets a clean definition.
- Grasshopper included
- The visual programming canvas ships in the box and drives model geometry live from wired components and sliders.
- No forced history tree
- Modelling is direct, so geometry from any source can be edited without rebuilding it into a parametric structure first.
- Broad format translation
- Reads and writes solid, mesh, drawing and point cloud formats, and repairs files that arrive damaged from elsewhere.
- Mesh and subdivision tools
- SubD objects model organic shapes quickly and convert to NURBS surfaces when the shape is settled.
- Layout and drawing output
- Detail views, dimensions, annotation styles and printable layouts for handing a model over as drawings.
Changed in this version
- Faster display pipeline on large assemblies with many blocks.
- SubD to NURBS conversion produces cleaner surface patches.
- Grasshopper component library reorganised with a searchable palette.
- Improved import of damaged solid model files from other packages.
- Rendering engine gains better handling of glass and layered materials.
System requirements
| Processor | Intel or AMD 64 bit, 2 GHz or faster |
|---|---|
| Memory | 8 GB minimum, 16 GB recommended for large models |
| Graphics | GPU with 4 GB of dedicated memory and current drivers |
| Disk | 6 GB free for the install and support files |
| Display | 1920 by 1080 or higher |
Install order
- Unpack the archive to a folder with no accented characters in the path.
- Close any running modelling application before starting the installer.
- Run the installer and pick the interface language during setup.
- Launch once and let the display pipeline build its cache before opening a heavy model.
Worth knowing before you start
Grasshopper is part of the install, so no separate download is needed.
Display performance depends heavily on graphics driver version, so update it first.
