Pixologic ZBrush 2026

Version 2026.2.1Maxon1.98 GBFull desktop buildRefreshed 1 week ago

Digital sculpting at a level of detail no other modeller handles, with a toolset that works nothing like the rest of them.

About this release

ZBrush does not work like other three dimensional applications and never has. There is no traditional viewport with a perspective camera you orbit around a grid, there is a canvas with a model on it, and the interface is a wall of buttons that makes no sense for about a week and then becomes faster than anything else. Nobody defends the learning curve. Everybody who got through it stays.

The reason to get through it is the detail ceiling. The sculpting engine handles meshes into the tens of millions of polygons on ordinary hardware, so pores, fabric weave, scale patterns and surface wear are sculpted as actual geometry rather than painted into a map afterwards. Dynamic tessellation adds resolution only where the brush is working, so density goes where it is needed instead of everywhere at once.

The topology tools are what make the results usable downstream. Automatic retopology produces a clean animation ready mesh from a sculpt, the detail from the high resolution version projects onto it as displacement and normal maps, and the unwrapping tools generate usable coordinates without leaving the application. A sculpt that started as a rough shape ends as a production asset without a trip through another program.

Around the sculpting sit the tools that keep the workflow inside one window: hard surface booleans that resolve cleanly, a full brush and alpha library, polypainting that colours the mesh directly without needing coordinates first, fibre generation for hair and fur, posing with a mesh based rig, and rendering with a materials and lighting set good enough for presentation images straight out of the application.

What it does

Extreme detail ceiling
Sculpt meshes into the tens of millions of polygons on ordinary hardware without the viewport collapsing.
Dynamic tessellation
Resolution is added only where the brush is working rather than across the whole mesh.
Automatic retopology
Generate a clean animation ready mesh from a sculpt and project the detail back as maps.
Hard surface booleans
Live boolean operations that resolve into clean geometry for mechanical and prop work.
Polypainting
Colour the mesh directly at sculpt resolution with no unwrapping required first.
Presentation rendering
Materials, lighting and render passes good enough for finished images without another application.

Changed in this version

  • Faster brush response on very dense meshes.
  • Retopology output produces cleaner edge flow around detailed areas.
  • Boolean resolution improved on intersecting hard surface parts.
  • New brushes and alphas added to the standard library.
  • Reduced memory use when several high resolution subtools are active.

System requirements

ProcessorIntel or AMD 64 bit with SSE 4.2, four cores or more
Memory16 GB minimum, 32 GB or more for very dense sculpts
GraphicsAny GPU with current drivers, sculpting is processor and memory bound
Disk12 GB free, solid state recommended for scratch
Display1920 by 1080 or higher, a pen tablet strongly recommended

Install order

  1. Unpack the archive to a short path.
  2. Install the pen tablet driver first if one is being used.
  3. Run the installer and include the brush and material libraries.
  4. Launch once, set the scratch disk location, and raise the memory limit in preferences before a heavy sculpt.

Worth knowing before you start

Sculpting performance depends on memory and processor rather than the graphics card.

A pen tablet is not required but the pressure sensitive brushes are most of the point.
