About this release

Mastercam sits between the design model and the machine on the shop floor. A part arrives as geometry, and the job is to decide how it will be cut: which tools, in what order, along what paths, at what feeds and speeds, and then to produce the code the specific controller on that specific machine will accept. It is the most widely used package on shop floors for exactly that reason.

Toolpath coverage spans two through five axis milling, turning, mill turn, wire cutting and routing. The high speed strategies maintain constant tool engagement so the cutter is not shock loaded coming into a corner, which extends tool life considerably and allows more aggressive removal rates on hard material. Rest machining works out what earlier operations left behind and cleans it up without programming that by hand.

Simulation is what keeps the machine intact. The whole job runs against a model of the actual machine, including the fixture, the table, the head and the tool holders, so collisions and over travels are found on the screen rather than on the floor. Stock is removed as it goes, and the finished simulated part can be compared against the model to see where it deviates.

Post processors are the last link. Output is tuned to the exact controller on each machine so the code runs without hand editing, and the library covers the common controller families with customisation for shop specific requirements. Tool and material libraries carry feeds and speeds so a program starts from sensible numbers rather than a guess.

Install order

  1. Unpack the archive to a drive with plenty of free space.
  2. Install the prerequisite runtime components the installer lists first.
  3. Run the main installer and choose the machine types you actually program for.
  4. Set the tool library and post processor for the shop machines before the first job.

Worth knowing before you start

Post processors must match the controller exactly, so verify output on a dry run first.

Simulation is only as accurate as the machine and fixture models loaded into it.
