About this release
Maya is the package that studio pipelines are written against, and that is as much a statement about its scripting layer as about its modelling tools. Everything in the application is exposed to script, every action can be recorded and replayed, and studios have spent decades building tools on top of that, which is why a production job posting still names this program more often than any other.
The animation side is the core. The rigging system covers joints, skinning, deformers, constraints and a full node graph for building control behaviour, and the animation tools cover keyframes, the graph editor, time editor layers, motion trails and retargeting between rigs. Character work at feature quality happens here, and the tools assume an animator who wants curve level control rather than presets.
Modelling, texturing and effects sit around that centre. Polygon and subdivision modelling with a full retopology toolset, UV editing with automatic unwrapping, procedural shading, and an effects side covering particles, fluids, cloth, hair and rigid body simulation. The Bifrost graph handles the larger procedural and simulation work as a node network that can be saved and reused across shots.
Rendering is handled by Arnold, which is installed with the application. It is a path tracer, so lighting behaves physically and the setup work is mostly about placing lights and building materials rather than tuning fake bounce. Render layers, AOV output and the standard exchange formats are all present for handing shots to a compositor.

Install order
- Unpack the archive to a path without spaces or accents.
- Close other Autodesk applications before running the installer.
- Install and include the Arnold renderer component when prompted.
- Launch once and set the project directory before starting real work.
Worth knowing before you start
Arnold installs with the application, so a separate renderer download is not needed.
Setting a project directory on first launch keeps scene, texture and cache paths resolvable later.
