About this release
Inventor is mechanical design done parametrically, which means a part is a recorded sequence of operations rather than a finished lump of geometry. Sketch, extrude, fillet, hole, pattern, and every one of those steps stays in the tree where it can be edited later with everything downstream rebuilding around the change. Dimension a bracket wrong and you fix the dimension, not the model.
Assemblies are where the parametric approach earns its keep. Parts are constrained to each other by joints and mates that describe how they actually connect, so an assembly can be dragged through its range of motion to check clearance and travel before anything is made. Interference detection finds parts occupying the same space, and the bill of materials generates from the assembly structure rather than being maintained separately.
The Professional edition adds the analysis and specialised design work. Stress and modal simulation run against parts and assemblies with results shown as deformation and safety factor plots, dynamic simulation drives an assembly through motion with loads applied, tube and pipe design routes runs with real fittings, and the cable and harness tools handle electrical routing with wire lengths reported back for manufacture.
Documentation runs straight off the model. Drawing views, sections, details, dimensions, hole tables, balloons and parts lists all reference the model and update when it changes, so a design revision does not mean redrawing anything. Sheet metal parts unfold into flat patterns for cutting, frame generator builds structural members from a skeleton sketch, and exchange formats cover what suppliers and machinists expect to receive.

Install order
- Unpack the archive to a path without spaces or accents.
- Close other Autodesk applications before running the installer.
- Install and include the content centre libraries for the standards you use.
- Launch once and set the project file and templates before starting a design.
Worth knowing before you start
Content centre libraries are a large share of the install size but supply standard fasteners and parts.
Setting a project file first keeps assembly file references resolvable when the folder moves.
