About this release
3ds Max is the modelling and rendering application that a large share of architectural visualisation, product imagery and games art passes through. The polygon toolset is deep and predictable, the modifier stack keeps every operation editable in order, and the viewport is fast enough that a scene with millions of triangles stays workable rather than becoming a slideshow.
The modifier stack is the idea the whole application is built on. Every operation you apply sits in a list on the object, stays live, and can be reordered, disabled or adjusted at any point afterwards. A chamfer applied early can be changed after an hour of further work without unpicking anything, which is why the program suits the kind of job where the brief keeps moving.
Scene assembly for visualisation is handled properly at scale. Instancing, proxies, scatter tools and layer management let a scene carry a forest, a crowd or a full building interior without the file becoming unmanageable, and imported CAD and modelling data comes in with its structure intact rather than as one undifferentiated mesh.
Animation and rendering close it out. Keyframe and procedural animation, character rigging, cloth, particles and physics simulation all ship in the box, and the bundled renderer produces final quality output with physical materials and lighting. The plugin ecosystem is enormous, so most studios shape the program around their pipeline with a handful of third party engines and tools.
What it does
- Modifier stack
- Every operation stays live and reorderable long after it was applied.
- Deep polygon toolset
- Modelling tools that behave predictably on both hard surface and organic work.
- Scene assembly at scale
- Instancing, proxies and scatter tools keep very large scenes workable.
- Animation and simulation
- Keyframe and procedural animation, rigging, cloth, particles and physics included.
- Bundled production renderer
- Physical materials and lighting with final quality output in the box.
- Plugin ecosystem
- Third party renderers and pipeline tools attach as native toolbars and panels.
Changed in this version
- Viewport performance improved on very high polygon scenes.
- New procedural modelling tools added to the standard set.
- Faster scene load on files with heavy instancing.
- Improved import of CAD data with structure preserved.
- Retimed animation editing reworked for clarity.
System requirements
| Processor | Intel or AMD with 64 bit support, eight cores or more recommended |
|---|---|
| Memory | 16 GB minimum, 64 GB for large visualisation scenes |
| Graphics | GPU with 8 GB of dedicated memory and a certified driver |
| Disk | 30 GB free, solid state recommended |
| Display | 1920 by 1080 or higher |
Install order
- Unpack the archive to a drive with plenty of free space.
- Update the graphics driver first, since the viewport depends on it heavily.
- Run the installer and let the shared components install alongside the application.
- Launch once and set the project folder before importing a real scene.
Worth knowing before you start
A certified graphics driver makes a large difference to viewport stability.
Set the project folder early so scene assets resolve correctly later.
