About this release

PDFelement covers the same ground as the expensive incumbents and spends its design effort on making the common jobs obvious. The toolbar is short, the tools are named in plain words, and the tasks most people actually need, editing text, filling a form, combining files, converting to a document format, are one click from the start screen rather than three menus deep.

Text editing offers both a line mode and a paragraph mode, which is a genuinely useful distinction. Paragraph mode reflows an entire block as you type, and line mode edits a single line in place without disturbing anything around it, which is what you want on a form, a certificate or a document where the layout is fragile and the change is one word.

Optical character recognition covers a long list of languages and produces a searchable layer over the original scan, so the page still looks like the page while the text becomes selectable. Batch recognition runs across a folder, which turns a box of scanned paper into a searchable archive without anyone sitting through it file by file.

The rest is thorough. Form creation with field detection and data extraction into a spreadsheet, page organisation, watermarks, headers, numbering, redaction, password and certificate protection, comparison between two versions of a document with the differences highlighted, and batch tools that apply any of it across a whole folder in one pass.
