About this release

InDesign is the application for documents where the typography has to be right and the page count is large. Books, magazines, catalogues, reports and any job where a change on page four cannot be allowed to break page four hundred. Master pages, paragraph and character styles, and threaded text frames mean a structural change propagates instead of being repeated by hand.

The typesetting engine is the reason it holds its position. Optical margin alignment, proper hyphenation and justification control, baseline grids, nested styles and GREP styles let a designer set rules once and have every subsequent page obey them. Long document features cover tables of contents, indexes, cross references and book files that bind several documents into one numbering sequence.

Production output is thorough. Preflight runs continuously and flags a missing link or an overset frame before the file leaves, packaging collects fonts and links into one folder, and the PDF presets cover press, proof and screen with correct transparency flattening and colour conversion.

It also handles interactive output, so the same layout can produce a fixed layout digital edition with hyperlinks, buttons and page transitions without rebuilding it from scratch.
