About this release
There is a reason this generation of the suite keeps being downloaded long after several newer ones exist. It is small, it is fast, it runs comfortably on hardware that predates most of what is on sale now, and it does the things that most document work actually consists of without any of the connected features that arrived later. On a machine with four gigabytes of memory it opens instantly where a current build crawls.
The Professional Plus edition is the full component list. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, Access, Publisher and InfoPath are all here, which is a wider set than the consumer editions carried and includes the database and publishing components that small offices built workflows around and never migrated away from.
File compatibility is complete in the direction that matters. The open document formats introduced in the previous generation are the native formats here, so files move between this and current builds without conversion, and the compatibility pack behaviour for the older binary formats is built in. Macros written for this generation still run, which is the actual reason many organisations stayed on it.
Installation is the classic setup with a component tree, so anything unwanted can be set to not install rather than being laid down and ignored. The suite is multilingual, with the display language chosen during setup, and it coexists on a machine with a newer suite generation if the components are chosen carefully.

Worth knowing before you start
Installing alongside a newer suite generation works, but let each generation own its own file associations.
The 32 bit build is the safer choice if older add ins are in use.
