Microsoft Office 2007

Version 12.0.6612.1000Microsoft728 MBEnterpriseRefreshed 2 weeks ago

The release that introduced the ribbon, still installed where an old machine or an old document set demands it.

About this release

Office 2007 is the version that changed how the suite looked. The ribbon replaced menus and toolbars, the new file formats arrived, and a generation of documents were written in it. It stays in circulation because there are still machines that cannot run anything newer, offices with workflows built around it, and archives full of files that behave most predictably in the application that created them.

The suite covers the full set. Word for documents, Excel for spreadsheets, PowerPoint for presentations, Outlook for mail and calendar, Access for databases, Publisher for layout, OneNote for notes and the shared tools that sit under all of them. Everything installs from one path and shares the same clipboard, styling and drawing engine.

It is undemanding in a way that modern software is not. It runs comfortably on machines with a fraction of the memory a current suite expects, launches quickly on mechanical drives, and works entirely offline with no background component checking anything. On old hardware being kept alive for a specific job, that is precisely the point.

File handling reaches both directions. The current document formats open and save natively, and the older binary formats from the previous generation open without a converter, which makes this build useful as a bridge for an archive that spans both. Printing, mail merge, macro support and the drawing tools all behave the way documents from this era expect.

What it does

The full application set
Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access, Publisher and OneNote from a single install.
Ribbon interface
The tabbed command layout this release introduced, with the classic keyboard sequences still working.
Both document generations
Opens and saves the current formats and the older binary formats without a separate converter.
Very low requirements
Runs comfortably on hardware that current suites will not install on at all.
Fully offline
No background component and no network requirement at any point after installation.
Macro support
The macro language of this era runs unchanged, which is why legacy workbooks stay on it.

Changed in this version

  • Final service pack rollup included in the build.
  • Cumulative compatibility updates applied for the current document formats.
  • Installer reworked to complete cleanly on recent Windows versions.
  • Font set completed so older documents render as intended.
  • Fixed printing behaviour on modern driver models.

System requirements

Processor500 MHz or faster
Memory256 MB minimum, 1 GB recommended
Disk3 GB free
SystemWindows 7 or newer
Display1024 by 768 or higher

Install order

  1. Remove any other Office version first if you want this one to own the file associations.
  2. Unpack the archive.
  3. Run setup and choose a custom install to leave out the applications you will not use.
  4. Open each application once so first run configuration completes before real work.

Worth knowing before you start

Side by side installs with a newer Office are possible but file associations will fight.

Keep the install path short, as the installer of this era dislikes very long paths.
