About this release
Deleting a file removes the reference to it, not the data, and that gap is what every recovery tool works in. Recoverit scans a drive for the traces left behind, rebuilds what it can into a browsable file tree, and lets each result be previewed before anything is written back, which is how you find out whether a recovery is worth doing before committing to it.
Two scan depths cover the common cases. The quick scan reads the filesystem records for recently deleted entries and finishes in a few minutes with the original names and folder structure intact. The deep scan reads the whole surface looking for file signatures, which takes considerably longer, recovers from formatted and repartitioned drives, and returns files sorted by type when the original names are gone.
Preview is the feature that decides whether a result is usable. Images, documents, spreadsheets, presentations, audio and video all render inside the application before recovery, so a partially overwritten file can be identified as such rather than being recovered into a folder of broken results. The scan can be paused and resumed, and its state saved so a long scan does not have to be repeated.
Beyond ordinary deletion it handles the harder situations: formatted partitions, drives that lost their partition table, external drives and memory cards that the system reports as unformatted, and a repair mode for video and image files that were damaged rather than lost. A bootable recovery environment can be built for machines that no longer start, so a failing system drive can be read from outside.
What it does
- Two scan depths
- A quick filesystem scan for recent deletions and a deep signature scan for formatted or damaged drives.
- Preview before recovery
- Images, documents, audio and video render in the application so results can be judged before writing.
- Structure preservation
- Original names and folder trees are restored where the filesystem records survived.
- Formatted and lost partitions
- Recovers from reformatted drives and volumes whose partition table is gone.
- File repair mode
- Repairs damaged video and image files rather than only recovering lost ones.
- Bootable environment
- Build a recovery stick to read a system drive from a machine that no longer starts.
Changed in this version
- Faster deep scan on drives larger than four terabytes.
- Additional file signatures added for current camera and document formats.
- Preview rendering improved for large raw image files.
- Scan state saving reworked so long scans resume reliably.
- Bootable environment refreshed with current storage drivers.
System requirements
| Processor | Intel or AMD 64 bit, 1 GHz or faster |
|---|---|
| Memory | 4 GB minimum, 8 GB for scanning very large drives |
| Disk | 500 MB for the install plus room for recovered files on a different drive |
| Media | A USB stick if the bootable environment is needed |
| System | Windows 7 or newer |
Install order
- Install onto a different drive from the one you intend to recover from.
- Unpack the archive and run the installer.
- Run a quick scan first and only start a deep scan if the file is not found.
- Recover results to a separate drive, never back onto the drive being scanned.
Worth knowing before you start
Stop using a drive as soon as something is lost, since new writes overwrite what is recoverable.
Recovering onto the same drive being scanned destroys the data still waiting to be found.
