A bootable maintenance environment with the full technician toolkit already assembled inside it.

About this release

This is the maintenance environment that has quietly become the default on repair benches. It boots a full preinstallation environment from a stick, complete with a desktop, a file manager, network support and a start menu, and behind that menu sits the collection of tools a technician actually reaches for, already installed and already working. The value is not in any single tool being unavailable elsewhere, it is that all of them run here, from media, on a machine whose own system is broken.

Coverage is deliberately wide. Partition managers for restructuring drives, imaging and cloning tools for taking a copy before touching anything, file and partition recovery for volumes that have been deleted or overwritten, boot repair for loader entries and boot records, password tools for locked accounts, registry editors that mount the offline hive, and hardware diagnostics for memory, drive health and temperature. Several tools in each category, because different tools succeed on different failures.

Three environments are provided from the same media so that hardware old and new is covered: builds based on the current generation, on the previous one and on an older one still, with the older ones being the ones that boot on machines whose drivers the newer environment does not carry. Both firmware types boot, so one stick handles a whole workshop.

Because it is a real preinstallation environment rather than a menu shell, the desktop behaves like a desktop. Network drives can be mapped for pulling an image off a server, a browser is available for looking up a part number mid job, and additional tools can be run straight from a second stick if something specific is needed. The drive being worked on is never the drive the environment is running from.

What it does

Boots a full working desktop
A real preinstallation environment with file manager, network and start menu, not just a tool launcher.
Several tools per category
Multiple partition, imaging and recovery tools, because different failures respond to different tools.
Three environment generations
Current, previous and older builds on the same media so old hardware still boots.
Offline registry and password work
Mount the installed system's hive and repair accounts or settings without booting it.
Imaging and cloning
Take a copy of a failing drive before attempting anything that writes to it.
Hardware diagnostics
Memory tests, drive health and temperature readouts to rule hardware in or out early.

Changed in this version

  • Tool collection updated across every category to current versions.
  • Expanded driver coverage for recent network and storage controllers.
  • Start menu reorganised with clearer groupings by task.
  • Faster boot on the current generation environment.
  • Fixed a display resolution issue on some laptop panels.

System requirements

ProcessorAny x86 processor, 1 GHz or faster
Memory2 GB for the current environment, 1 GB for the older ones

Install order

  1. Write the image to a USB stick with a tool that handles bootable media.
  2. Change the boot order in firmware so the stick comes first.
  3. Pick the environment generation that matches the age of the machine.
  4. Image the drive before running anything that modifies it.

Worth knowing before you start

The older environments exist for hardware the current one will not boot on, so try them before giving up.

Secure boot may need to be disabled to boot the media on some machines.
