K-Lite Codec Pack

Version 19.9.0KLCP68.4 MBFull bundleRefreshed 4 days ago

A curated decoder and player bundle that makes a machine play every audio and video format it is handed.

About this release

The reason this pack has been a standard install for two decades is that media formats never settled down. A machine that plays everything today will meet a file it refuses to open next month, and working out which decoder is missing is a research project nobody wants. This bundle installs a curated, tested set of decoders and splitters that between them cover everything in circulation, plus a player configured to use them properly.

Curation is what separates it from the packs that used to break machines. The components are chosen to work together rather than compete, the configuration is set so the right decoder handles the right format instead of several fighting over it, and known bad combinations are excluded. Installing it does not leave a machine in a worse state than before, which was not always true of this category.

Four installation profiles cover different needs. The smallest adds only decoding so existing players and the system's own frameworks handle more formats. The standard profile adds a full player. Larger profiles add extra tools, additional decoders, encoding support and the components media applications look for when they scan the system. The installer explains what each profile includes rather than making you guess.

The bundled player carries the useful behaviours: hardware accelerated decoding on the graphics card, subtitle rendering with proper styling and font handling, audio track and subtitle switching mid playback, a video renderer selection for machines with awkward drivers, and playback of partial or still downloading files. Advanced mode exposes the per format decoder assignment for anyone who wants to control it.

What it does

Curated component set
Decoders chosen and configured to work together rather than compete over the same formats.
Four install profiles

Hardware accelerated playback
Decoding runs on the graphics card, which matters on laptops and older machines.
Proper subtitle handling
Styled subtitle rendering with correct font handling and mid playback track switching.
Renderer selection
Choose a different video renderer when a machine's drivers misbehave with the default.
Partial file playback
Plays files that are incomplete or still arriving.

Install order

  1. Unpack the archive and run the installer.
  2. Choose the profile that matches what the machine is for.
  3. Let it remove conflicting decoder packs when it offers to.
  4. Pick file associations on the association screen rather than accepting everything.

Worth knowing before you start

Existing codec packs should be removed first, the installer offers to do it.

Advanced mode exposes per format decoder assignment for anyone who wants it.
