Hasleo WinToUSB

Version 10.8.1.2Hasleo Software38 MBEnterprise, Professional and Technician builds includedRefreshed 1 week ago

Builds a full system that boots and runs from a portable drive, plus installation and cloning media.

About this release

WinToUSB does something the standard tooling makes deliberately awkward: it installs a complete working system onto a USB drive so that system boots and runs from the drive on more or less any machine. That is a genuinely useful thing for support work, for carrying a configured environment between sites, and for running a known good environment on a machine you do not want to touch.

Sources can be an installation image, a physical disc, or the system currently running on the machine, which the program clones onto the portable drive with applications and settings intact. The result is a real installation rather than a rescue environment, so software installs, updates apply and files persist between sessions.

Drive handling is where the detail matters. Both partition schemes are supported so the drive boots on either firmware type, the tool can prepare a drive as a fixed rather than a removable device where the hardware allows it, which some system editions require, and encryption can be applied so a lost drive is not a lost estate. Performance is far better on a solid state enclosure than on a flash stick, and the program says so during setup.

Alongside the portable system builder are the supporting functions: creating ordinary bootable installation media from an image, cloning an existing system to another internal drive, and building a small maintenance environment for machines that will not start. The technician build adds the ability to prepare many drives in sequence for deploying a fleet.

What it does

Full system on a portable drive
A real installation that boots on other machines, not a rescue shell.
Clone the running system
Copy the current machine, applications and settings included, onto the portable drive.
Both firmware types
Prepare the drive with the partition scheme the target machine expects.
Fixed disk preparation
Present the drive as a fixed device where the hardware allows, which some editions require.
Drive encryption
Protect the contents so a lost drive is not an exposure.
Installation and rescue media
Build ordinary bootable installers and small maintenance environments too.

Changed in this version

  • Faster deployment to solid state enclosures.
  • Improved driver injection for target machines with different chipsets.
  • Encryption setup reworked into the main flow.
  • Support for larger installation images.
  • Batch preparation in the technician build handles more drives in sequence.

System requirements

ProcessorAny 1 GHz or faster processor
Memory2 GB minimum
Disk100 MB for the program
Target drive32 GB or larger, solid state enclosure strongly recommended
RightsAdministrator access for drive preparation

Install order

  1. Unpack the archive.
  2. Run the installer as administrator.
  3. Choose the source, whether an image, a disc or the running system.
  4. Select the partition scheme that matches the machines the drive will boot on.

Worth knowing before you start

A flash stick works but is slow enough to be unpleasant, so use a solid state enclosure.

Preparing the target drive erases everything already on it.
