Hard Disk Sentinel Pro

Version 6.40.3Janos Mathe38 MBProfessionalRefreshed 1 week ago

Watches every attached drive and tells you a failure is coming while there is still time to copy things off.

About this release

Hard Disk Sentinel reads the health data every modern drive keeps about itself and turns it into two numbers a person can act on: health and performance. Rather than showing a table of raw attribute values and leaving the interpretation to you, it weighs the ones that actually predict failure and reports a percentage with an explanation of what is dragging it down.

It covers mechanical drives, solid state drives and the current storage interfaces including external enclosures and drives behind many controllers, which is where simpler tools give up. Temperature is tracked continuously with a history, wear indicators are read on solid state media so remaining lifetime is a real estimate, and reallocated and pending sector counts are watched as the early signal they are.

The professional build is about acting on what it finds. Alerts go out by notification, sound, message, mail or a command that runs a script, backups can be triggered automatically when health drops past a threshold, and the machine can be told to shut down when a drive gets too hot. The point is that the warning arrives while the data is still readable.

The tools around the monitor cover the rest. Surface tests read, write or verify the whole drive to find bad areas, performance tests measure real transfer rates, and the reporting side keeps a daily record of health and temperature so a slow decline is visible as a trend rather than as a surprise on the morning it stops working.

What it does

Health and performance scores
Raw drive attributes weighed into two numbers with an explanation of what is affecting them.
Wide device coverage
Mechanical, solid state and external drives including many behind controllers that simpler tools cannot read.
Temperature history
Continuous logging with maximum and average tracking rather than a single current reading.
Alerts that do something
Notification, sound, mail or a command that can trigger a backup script when health drops.
Surface and performance tests
Read, write and verify passes to find bad areas, plus real transfer rate measurement.
Long term reporting
Daily health and temperature records so a slow decline shows as a trend.

Changed in this version

  • Support added for recent solid state controllers and their wear reporting.
  • External enclosure detection improved across more bridge chipsets.
  • Alert configuration reworked with a clearer test button.
  • Lower background resource use during continuous monitoring.
  • Reporting export gains a cleaner layout for long histories.

System requirements

ProcessorAny 1 GHz or faster processor
Memory512 MB
Disk100 MB free
SystemWindows 8.1 or newer
PermissionsAdministrator rights to read drive health data directly

Install order

  1. Unpack the archive.
  2. Run the installer and allow it administrator rights.
  3. Set the alert thresholds and a notification method on first launch.
  4. Leave it running in the background so the temperature and health history builds.

Worth knowing before you start

A health figure below the default threshold means copying data off first and diagnosing second.

Some external enclosures hide drive health data entirely, which is a limitation of the enclosure.
