TechSmith Camtasia

Version 26.2.0.19099TechSmith812 MBFull versionRefreshed 4 days ago

Screen capture and a straightforward editing timeline aimed squarely at training and demonstration video.

About this release

Camtasia is the tool people reach for when the video is a screen rather than a camera. The recorder captures the display, a window or a region along with system audio, microphone and webcam, and everything lands on a timeline that was designed for someone who edits occasionally rather than for a living. That balance is why it has stayed on so many corporate and education machines.

The editing side covers what training video actually needs: cuts, cursor effects, zoom and pan on a still screen, callouts, arrows, lower thirds, quiz interactions and captions. Cursor smoothing and click highlighting turn a jittery real time recording into something a viewer can follow, and the automatic zoom keyframes make small text readable without rerecording at a different resolution.

Templates and themes handle consistency across a series. A theme carries fonts, colours and callout styles, a template carries an entire structure with placeholders, and library assets keep intros, outros and motion backgrounds one drag away. For a team producing dozens of modules, that is the difference between a coherent course and a pile of clips.

Output covers the usual routes. Local files at a range of presets, direct upload to the common video platforms, and an interactive package that carries the quiz and table of contents alongside the video for a learning system to host. Captions can be typed, imported or generated from speech and exported as a sidecar file.

What it does

Screen, audio and webcam capture
Records the display, a window or a region with system sound, microphone and camera in one pass.
Cursor effects
Smoothing, click highlighting and magnification turn a real time recording into something a viewer can follow.
Zoom and pan keyframes
Automatic and manual zoom makes small interface text readable without recording again at another resolution.
Callouts and annotations
Arrows, shapes, highlights, blur regions and lower thirds with a consistent styling system.
Quizzes and interactivity
Question points and a table of contents that export inside an interactive package for a learning system.
Themes and templates
Fonts, colours, intros and structures reused across a whole series so modules match.

Changed in this version

  • Faster export on long recordings with heavy annotation stacks.
  • Speech to caption generation improved on accented speech.
  • New motion background and intro assets added to the bundled library.
  • Recorder gains a separate capture path for high refresh displays.
  • Timeline handles projects past the two hour mark with less lag.
  • Blur region tracking corrected on fast moving windows.

System requirements

ProcessorSixth generation Intel or equivalent, six cores recommended
Memory8 GB minimum, 16 GB for long recordings
GraphicsGPU with hardware encoding support for faster export
Disk4 GB for the install plus room for captures
Display1366 by 768 or higher

Install order

  1. Unpack the archive.
  2. Run the installer and allow the capture driver component to install.
  3. Restart if the installer asks, so the capture driver loads properly.
  4. Open the recorder once and confirm the correct display and audio device are selected.

Worth knowing before you start

The capture driver needs a restart on some machines before recording works reliably.

Projects reference their source recordings, so keep the capture folder in place.
