DaVinci Resolve Studio

Version 21.0.4Blackmagic Design5.18 GBStudioRefreshed 1 week ago

Editing, colour grading, audio post and effects in one application, in the paid Studio feature set.

About this release

Resolve is unusual in that it is genuinely four applications sharing one project. The cut and edit pages handle assembly, the colour page is the grading system that made the program famous, Fairlight is a full digital audio workstation, and Fusion is a node based compositor. Nothing round trips, nothing renders between stages, and a change on one page is live on all the others.

The Studio edition is the one worth having. It removes the resolution and frame rate ceiling of the free build, adds the noise reduction and optical flow retiming that colourists rely on, unlocks the neural engine tools for tracking, object masking and speed warping, and enables multiple graphics cards for rendering. On a machine with real hardware in it, the difference in throughput is large.

Colour work is the core. Primary wheels, log controls, curves, qualifiers, power windows and an unlimited node graph, all in a colour managed pipeline that handles camera log formats correctly from import to delivery. Scopes are built in and accurate enough for broadcast delivery without an external box.

Fairlight covers the audio side completely, with track counts and bus routing that suit a full mix rather than a rough pass. Fusion handles compositing, paint, tracking and 3D in a node graph that will be familiar to anyone from a visual effects background. Delivery writes to every common broadcast and streaming codec.

What it does

Four applications, one project
Edit, colour, audio and compositing pages share the same timeline with no round trip.
Studio only tools
Noise reduction, optical flow retiming, neural engine tracking and multi card rendering.
Node based grading
Unlimited nodes, qualifiers, power windows and a fully colour managed pipeline.
Fairlight audio
Full mixing environment with bus routing, automation and a large effect set.
Fusion compositing
Node based paint, tracking, keying and 3D inside the same application.
Broadcast delivery
Accurate scopes and encoding presets for every common broadcast and streaming target.

Changed in this version

  • Faster playback on timelines with heavy node graphs.
  • Neural engine object masking improved on partial occlusion.
  • New codec support added on the delivery page.
  • Fairlight bus routing interface reworked.
  • Project database opens faster on very large libraries.

System requirements

ProcessorEight cores or more strongly recommended
Memory16 GB minimum, 32 GB for Fusion work
GraphicsGPU with 6 GB of dedicated memory or more
Disk20 GB for the install plus fast media storage
Display1920 by 1080 minimum, colour accurate panel recommended

Install order

  1. Unpack the archive.
  2. Update the graphics driver before installing, since the installer checks it.
  3. Run the installer, which also installs the required runtime components.
  4. Open the application, create a project database and set the cache location.

Worth knowing before you start

An out of date graphics driver is the most common cause of a failed first launch.

Project databases should live on a drive with regular backups.
