CapCut

Version 9.2.0.3931Bytedance614 MBDesktop buildRefreshed 3 days ago

Fast timeline editing for short form work, with captioning and effects built for social output.

About this release

CapCut is a video editor built for people who need something finished today. The timeline is conventional enough that anyone who has used an editor before will find their way around in minutes, but almost every common task has been reduced to one action: captions from speech, background removal without a green screen, beat detection that drops markers onto the music, and aspect ratio conversion that keeps the subject framed.

The desktop build is considerably more capable than the phone version people know it from. Multiple video and audio tracks, keyframes on position, scale, rotation and opacity, curve based speed ramps, masks, chroma key and a colour panel with curves and scopes. It is a real editor that happens to have the fast paths in front.

The effect, transition and sticker libraries are large and organised well enough to actually search. Text presets cover animated titles, subtitle styles and lower thirds without needing a motion application, and everything remains adjustable rather than being a flattened preset.

Export presets target the common delivery shapes directly, vertical, square and widescreen, at sensible bitrates. Rendering uses hardware encoding where the machine supports it, so a few minutes of finished video takes a fraction of the runtime rather than a multiple of it.

What it does

Captions from speech
Automatic transcription generates a styled subtitle track that stays editable.
Background removal
Subject cutout without a green screen, with edge refinement for hair.
Beat detection
Markers drop onto the music automatically so cuts land on the beat.
Speed ramps
Curve based retiming with optical smoothing on the transition.
Aspect conversion
Reframe from widescreen to vertical or square with subject tracking.
Hardware export
Encoding uses the graphics card where available, which cuts render time sharply.

Changed in this version

  • Transcription accuracy improved across more languages.
  • Background removal handles motion blur better on fast movement.
  • New text and transition presets added to the library.
  • Faster project load on timelines with many small clips.
  • Fixed audio drift on some variable frame rate imports.

System requirements

ProcessorQuad core, 2 GHz or faster
Memory8 GB minimum, 16 GB recommended
GraphicsGPU with 2 GB of dedicated memory for hardware encoding
Disk5 GB plus room for media and cache
Display1920 by 1080 or higher

Install order

  1. Unpack the archive.
  2. Run the installer and choose an install folder with space for cache.
  3. Launch once and set the media cache location in settings.
  4. Import a short test clip before starting a real project.

Worth knowing before you start

Cache grows quickly with heavy effect use, so point it at a drive with room.

Hardware encoding needs a current graphics driver to appear in export options.
