About this release
Smadav is built on an unusual premise for this category: it is not trying to be the only protection on the machine. It is designed as a second layer that installs alongside whatever main suite is already there and does not fight with it, which most scanners cannot manage. The whole program is a handful of megabytes, uses almost no memory and does not slow the machine down, so having it running costs nothing noticeable.
Its specialism is removable media, which is still how a great deal of trouble travels between machines that are otherwise offline or well protected. Any drive plugged in is scanned automatically, the shortcut and hidden folder tricks that infections use to disguise themselves are detected and reversed, and files that were hidden rather than deleted are restored rather than lost. For an office where drives move between machines all day, that is the entire problem solved.
The Pro feature set adds the parts that matter for someone administering machines rather than just using one. Automatic definition updates, scan scheduling, an exception list that actually holds, administrative password protection so the scanner cannot be switched off by whoever is at the keyboard, and a change of the interface colour so it is obvious at a glance which tier is running.
A small set of manual tools sits beside the scanner for cleaning up after an infection has already done its work: restoring registration entries that were altered, re enabling the task manager and folder options when they have been locked out, unhiding files across a drive in one pass, and a process manager that shows what is actually running with the file path attached.
What it does
- Second layer by design
- Installs alongside an existing protection suite without conflicting with it.
- Automatic removable drive scanning
- Any drive plugged in is checked and cleaned before it is browsed.
- Shortcut and hidden file repair
- Reverses the disguise tricks infections use and restores hidden files rather than deleting them.
- Very small footprint
- A few megabytes of program and almost no memory or processor use while resident.
- Scheduling and automatic updates
- Definition updates and scheduled scans handled without intervention.
- Administrative protection
- Password locking so the scanner cannot be disabled by whoever is using the machine.
Changed in this version
- Detection database refreshed with current removable media threats.
- Faster scanning on drives with very large numbers of small files.
- Exception list handling reworked so entries persist correctly across updates.
- Improved repair of altered folder and task manager policies.
- Interface scaling corrected on high density displays.

- Run a full scan once so the baseline is established.
Worth knowing before you start
This is intended to run beside a main protection suite rather than replace one.
The exception list should be filled before the first scheduled scan on a working machine.
