AMAN VPN

Version 2.3.2AMAN58.6 MBFull versionRefreshed 6 days ago

An encrypted tunnel client with a wide server list and a kill switch, built to be simple to use.

About this release

AMAN VPN is built around a single button and a list of places. Connect, and the machine's traffic goes through an encrypted tunnel to a server somewhere else, which means the network the machine is sitting on sees an encrypted stream rather than a list of what was visited. On a hotel connection, a café, an airport or any shared network, that is the difference between browsing and broadcasting.

The tunnel uses modern protocols with the current generation of encryption, and the client picks the one that works on the network it finds itself on rather than failing when a restrictive connection blocks the usual ports. The server list spans a wide set of locations with load figures shown, so a busy one can be avoided, and a quick connect option simply takes the fastest available rather than making the choice a decision.

The protective details are the ones that matter and are often missing elsewhere. A kill switch drops all traffic if the tunnel goes down, so nothing leaks out over the ordinary connection during a reconnect. Leak protection covers name resolution and both address families. Split tunnelling lets specific applications bypass the tunnel, which is what keeps a printer or a local network share reachable while everything else is routed away.

Everything else stays out of the way. It can connect automatically when it detects an unknown or unprotected network, start with the system, remember a preferred location, and sit in the notification area with a status indicator. The interface is deliberately plain, because a tool that people turn on before checking their bank balance should not need a manual.

What it does

Modern encrypted protocols
Current generation tunnelling with automatic fallback when a restrictive network blocks the usual ports.
Wide server list
Many locations with load figures shown, plus a quick connect that takes the fastest available.
Kill switch
All traffic is dropped if the tunnel fails, so nothing leaks during a reconnect.
Leak protection
Name resolution and both address families are covered rather than just the obvious one.
Split tunnelling
Chosen applications bypass the tunnel so local printers and shares stay reachable.
Automatic connection
Connects on its own when it detects an unknown or unprotected network.

Changed in this version

  • Additional server locations added across several regions.
  • Faster connection times on the current protocol.
  • Split tunnelling gains per application rules with a clearer editor.
  • Improved reconnection behaviour when moving between networks.
  • Fixed a name resolution leak on certain adapter configurations.

System requirements

Processor1 GHz or faster
Memory2 GB minimum
Disk200 MB
NetworkBroadband connection
PermissionsAdministrator rights to install the network adapter

Install order

  1. Unpack the archive and run the installer with administrator rights.
  2. Allow the virtual network adapter to install when prompted.
  3. Turn on the kill switch and leak protection before the first connection.
  4. Add local applications to split tunnelling if you need printers or shares to stay reachable.

Worth knowing before you start

The kill switch blocks all traffic when the tunnel drops, which is the point, so expect a brief outage on reconnect.

A virtual network adapter is installed, and removing the client removes it again.
