About this release
Studio One was designed after most of its competitors and it shows in how little friction there is between having an idea and hearing it. Instruments, effects, loops and files drag from the browser straight onto the timeline, tracks are created by dropping something onto empty space, and the routing that other applications hide behind menus is done by dragging one thing onto another.
The recording side is thorough. Unlimited audio and instrument tracks, comping across multiple takes with a lane view that makes choosing the best parts quick, tempo detection and stretching that keeps recorded material in time with the project, chord track that transposes audio and instrument parts together, and a note editor with the pattern and step sequencing that modern production expects.
Mixing is a full console with per channel processing, buses, effect sends, groups and a proper metering set. The bundled instrument and effect set is substantial rather than a token: virtual analogue and sample based instruments, a drum machine, sampler, compressors, equalisers, reverbs, delays, saturation, tape emulation and mastering processors, and third party plug in formats load alongside them.
The project page is the feature that separates it. Mastering lives inside the same file as the songs, so an album is assembled, sequenced, processed and exported without leaving the application, and a change made back in a song updates the master automatically. Notation and audio editing coexist in the same project too, which suits anyone who writes as well as records.
What it does
- Drag driven workflow
- Instruments, effects, loops and files drag from the browser directly onto the timeline with routing created as you go.
- Take comping
- Record multiple passes and assemble the best performance from a lane view without destructive editing.
- Chord track
- Transpose audio and instrument parts together and try harmonic changes across a whole arrangement.
- Full mixing console
- Per channel processing, buses, sends, groups and metering with third party plug in support.
- Integrated mastering
- Assemble and master an album in the same file as the songs, with changes propagating automatically.
- Large bundled library
- Virtual instruments, drum machine, sampler and a full effect set included with the install.
Changed in this version
- Lower latency monitoring on supported audio interfaces.
- Comping workflow improved with faster lane switching.
- New effects added to the bundled processing set.
- Notation editing gains better playback articulation handling.
- Project page export is faster on long albums.
System requirements
| Processor | Intel or AMD with 64 bit support, quad core recommended |
|---|---|
| Memory | 8 GB minimum, 16 GB for large sessions |
| Graphics | Any adapter with 1920 by 1080 support |
| Disk | 40 GB free for the full bundled library |
| Hardware | An audio interface with a low latency driver is strongly recommended |
Install order
- Unpack the archive and run the installer.
- Choose which parts of the bundled sound library to install, since the full set is large.
- Install the audio interface driver before first launch.
- Set the audio device and buffer size in preferences before recording.
Worth knowing before you start
The bundled sound library can be installed to a separate drive from the application.
Buffer size decides the balance between latency while recording and stability while mixing.
