The Foundry Nuke Studio

Version 17.0v4The Foundry1.86 GBNuke, NukeX and Nuke StudioRefreshed 2 weeks ago

Node based compositing at feature film scale, with conform and review built into the same application.

About this release

Nuke is what visual effects work looks like above a certain budget. Everything is a node graph, every operation is explicit, and there is no hidden layer order deciding what happens to an image. On a shot with two hundred nodes that clarity is not a preference, it is the only way the shot stays maintainable when it comes back with notes for the eighth time.

The image pipeline is uncompromising. Full 32 bit float linear throughout, proper colour management, deep image compositing that holds many samples per pixel so elements intersect correctly in depth, and multi channel handling so a render passes through with all its passes intact and available as separate inputs anywhere in the tree.

The extended set adds the heavy tools. Camera tracking and solving, point cloud generation, lens distortion analysis, planar tracking for replacements and clean ups, particle systems, the three dimensional workspace for cards, geometry and projections, and optical flow for retiming and smart vector work. These are the tools that make matchmove, set extension and beauty work practical rather than theoretical.

Studio builds add the front and back of the process to the compositing application itself: a conform timeline that assembles an edit from a decision list, shot management that pushes each shot into its own comp, and review playback with annotations. A supervisor can conform the cut, split the work, comp a shot and play the sequence back without changing application.

What it does

Node based compositing
Every operation is a visible node, so complex trees stay readable and revisable months later.
Deep compositing
Multiple samples per pixel let elements intersect correctly in depth without holdout mattes.
Camera tracking and solving
Solve a camera from the plate, generate a point cloud and analyse lens distortion for matchmove work.
Planar tracking
Track surfaces through a shot for replacements, clean up and paint fixes that hold across the whole plate.
Three dimensional workspace
Cards, geometry, projections and lights composited natively alongside the two dimensional tree.
Conform and review
Assemble an edit from a decision list, split it into shots and play the sequence back with annotations.

Changed in this version

  • Faster tree evaluation on very large node graphs.
  • Improved graphics card acceleration across more of the core node set.
  • Timeline conform handles mixed frame rate sources more reliably.
  • Python interface extended for pipeline automation.
  • Colour management defaults updated for current scene referred workflows.

System requirements

ProcessorIntel or AMD with 64 bit support, eight cores or more recommended
Memory16 GB minimum, 64 GB for feature scale work
GraphicsGPU with 8 GB of dedicated memory for accelerated nodes
Disk20 GB for the install plus fast storage for image sequences
Display1920 by 1080 minimum, colour accurate display strongly recommended

Install order

  1. Unpack the archive and run the installer as an administrator.
  2. Choose which of the three application variants to place on the start menu.
  3. Set the cache and temporary paths to fast storage before opening a heavy script.
  4. Confirm the graphics card is selected in preferences so accelerated nodes are used.

Worth knowing before you start

Image sequence work needs fast storage far more than it needs processor speed.

Colour configuration should be set before starting a project rather than changed part way through.
