Skin retouching that smooths tone without erasing the texture that makes a face look like a face.

About this release

Portraiture solves the retouching problem that eats the most time on any portrait job: evening out skin without the plastic result that a blur or a surface filter produces. It separates skin from everything else by colour range, smooths only the tonal variation while leaving the fine texture intact, and leaves eyes, lips, hair and edges untouched.

The mask is the reason it works. Rather than applying to the whole frame, it builds a skin mask from a sampled tone range with hue, saturation and lightness tolerances, so the effect lands only where skin actually is. The mask can be previewed on its own, refined by eyedropper on additional tones for mixed lighting, and combined with a manually painted mask in the host for full control.

Beyond smoothing it handles the corrections that go with it. Sharpness, softness, warmth, brightness and contrast can be applied to the masked region alone, which means a face can be lifted independently of the background in a single step rather than through a stack of masked adjustment layers.

It ships as a plug in for the common editors and cataloguers, with presets that cover the usual range from a very light pass on a natural portrait through to heavy work on beauty and commercial images. Batch processing runs the same settings across an entire shoot, which is where the time saving becomes real on a job with hundreds of frames.

What it does

Texture preserving smoothing
Evens tonal variation while leaving pore level detail, so faces do not turn plastic.
Skin tone masking
Builds a mask from a sampled tone range with hue, saturation and lightness tolerances, previewable on its own.
Multiple tone sampling
Add further tones for mixed lighting or several subjects in one frame.
Masked enhancements
Sharpness, warmth, brightness and contrast applied only to the skin region.
Preset range
From a light natural pass through to heavy beauty work, all adjustable and saveable.
Batch processing
Apply the same settings across a whole shoot rather than frame by frame.

  • Faster processing on high resolution files.
  • New preset collection aimed at natural and editorial looks.

  3. Select which hosts should receive the plug in on the component screen.
  4. Reopen the host and find it under the filter or plug in menu.

Worth knowing before you start

Applying it to a duplicate layer keeps the original skin available for blending back.

Sampling a second tone helps considerably when the lighting across a face is uneven.
