Version 14.2.0.13656ExpressVPN94 MBDesktop clientRefreshed 4 days ago

Encrypted tunnel client with a wide server network, split tunnelling and a connection kill switch.

About this release

This is a tunnel client for people who want their traffic encrypted before it reaches the network they are sitting on, and who care which country it appears to come from at the other end. The server list spans a large number of locations, and switching between them is a click, with the client picking the fastest endpoint in a country automatically if you do not want to choose one by hand.

The protocol handling is the technical core. A modern lightweight protocol is the default because it reconnects quickly and keeps throughput close to the underlying line speed, with the older standards available for networks that interfere with the newer one. Protocol selection can be left automatic, which tries them in order until one establishes.

The kill switch is the feature that makes it usable for anything that matters. If the tunnel drops, all traffic is blocked rather than silently falling back to the open connection, so nothing leaks during the gap before reconnection. It can be set to apply always or only while connected, and it survives sleep and network changes.

Split tunnelling decides what goes through and what does not, by application, so a browser can be tunnelled while a video call or a local backup goes direct. Around that are the ordinary conveniences: automatic connection on untrusted networks, a resolver that runs inside the tunnel so lookups do not leak, a shortcut panel and a speed test across the server list.

What it does

Large server network
Endpoints across many countries with automatic selection of the fastest in a region.
Modern and legacy protocols
A fast lightweight protocol by default with older standards for restrictive networks.
Kill switch
Traffic is blocked rather than leaking if the tunnel drops.
Split tunnelling by application
Choose which programs go through the tunnel and which go direct.
Resolver inside the tunnel
Name lookups travel encrypted rather than to the local network resolver.
Automatic connection
Connects itself on any network not marked as trusted.

Changed in this version

  • Faster reconnection after sleep and network changes.
  • Split tunnelling rules gain per network profiles.
  • Server list updated with additional locations.
  • Lower battery use on laptops while connected.
  • Improved behaviour on networks that throttle tunnelling protocols.

System requirements

ProcessorAny 1 GHz or faster processor
Memory1 GB
Disk300 MB free
NetworkAny connection, wired or wireless
RightsAdministrator access to install the network adapter

Install order

  1. Unpack the archive.
  2. Run the installer as administrator and allow the network adapter component.
  3. Choose the protocol mode and enable the kill switch on first run.
  4. Add local backup and printing applications to the split tunnel exclusions.

Worth knowing before you start

Captive portals have to be completed before the tunnel can connect.

With the kill switch always on, the machine has no connection at all until the tunnel establishes.
