About this release
PowerDirector's reputation is speed, and that shows up in two different ways. The render engine is genuinely fast, using hardware encoding across current graphics hardware to turn out finished files in a fraction of the time some competitors need. And the working method is fast, because so much of what a project needs is already in the library rather than being built from scratch.
The timeline is a conventional multi track editor with as many video and audio tracks as a project needs, keyframing on effectively every parameter, nested sequences, masking, motion tracking, chroma keying, speed ramping and multi camera editing with waveform sync. Anyone arriving from another editor will find the layout familiar within an hour, and the storyboard mode exists for assembling a rough shape before moving to the timeline.
The Ultimate edition includes the full content library, which is the reason to choose it. Transitions, titles and title animations, particle effects, backgrounds, overlays, colour grading presets, opening and closing templates and a royalty free music and sound effect collection, all installed rather than downloaded per use. For anyone producing regular short pieces to a deadline, this is where the time saving actually comes from.
The assisted tools are more useful than the marketing around them suggests. Sky replacement, background removal without a green screen, object detection and tracking, audio noise removal, wind removal, speech enhancement and automatic speech to text captioning all run locally and all output as ordinary editable clips and tracks rather than as locked results.
What it does
- Fast hardware rendering
- Encoding runs on current graphics hardware, cutting export times substantially on long timelines.
- Full multi track timeline
- Unlimited tracks, keyframing on nearly every parameter, nesting, masking and motion tracking.
- Complete content library
- Transitions, titles, templates, effects, backgrounds and royalty free audio installed with the Ultimate edition.
- Multi camera editing
- Waveform synchronised angles with a switchable view for interview and event work.
- Assisted tools
- Background removal, sky replacement, noise reduction and speech captioning that output editable results.
- Storyboard and timeline modes
- Rough a piece out in storyboard view then move to the timeline for detail work.
Changed in this version
- Faster export on current graphics hardware.
- Background removal improved on hair and fine detail edges.
- Additional templates and title animations added to the library.
- Captioning accuracy improved with better handling of accented speech.
- Timeline redraw speeded up on projects with heavy effect stacks.
System requirements
| Processor | Intel or AMD 64 bit, six cores recommended |
|---|---|
| Memory | 8 GB minimum, 16 GB for high resolution work |
| Graphics | GPU with 4 GB of dedicated memory and current drivers |
| Disk | 12 GB for the install plus fast storage for media and cache |
| Display | 1920 by 1080 or higher |
Install order
- Unpack the archive to a drive with room for the full content library.
- Run the installer and include the content packs when prompted.
- Point the working folder and cache at a fast drive in preferences.
- Confirm hardware encoding is detected in the produce settings before a long export.
Worth knowing before you start
The content library is most of the install size and can be placed on a separate drive.
Export speed depends on the graphics driver, so update it before comparing render times.
