Capture One Pro

Version 16.8.4.3645Capture One1.06 GBPro and EnterpriseRefreshed 6 days ago

Raw processing and tethered capture with the colour handling that studio work is built around.

About this release

Capture One is the raw processor that studios use when the colour has to be right the first time. Its camera profiles are built per body rather than generically, and the difference shows immediately on skin, fabric and product surfaces, where the default rendering lands somewhere usable instead of somewhere that needs half an hour of correction before work can start.

Tethered shooting is the other half of its reputation. The camera connects, frames land in the session within a second of the shutter, a capture look applies as they arrive, and the client can watch on a second screen with a clean full screen view. Live view, remote camera control, overlays for a layout and automatic naming rules make a commercial shoot run without anyone touching the computer.

Editing is layer based rather than a flat parameter list. Any adjustment can be masked, masks can be drawn, gradient based, luminosity based or generated from an automatic selection, and layers carry their own opacity. The colour editor works on defined ranges including a skin tone mode that shifts hue, saturation and lightness independently within a narrow band.

Sessions and catalogues cover both ways of working. A session is a self contained folder for one job, which is how most commercial shoots want to be organised, while a catalogue holds a whole archive with searching and keywording. Output covers process recipes that export several versions at once in different sizes, formats and colour spaces from a single command.

What it does

Per camera colour profiles
Profiles built for individual bodies rather than generically, giving a usable starting rendering.
Tethered capture
Frames land in the session as they are shot, with live view, remote control and a clean client display.
Layer based editing
Every adjustment can be masked, with drawn, gradient, luminosity and automatic masks and per layer opacity.
Colour editor with skin mode
Adjust defined colour ranges independently, with a skin band that keeps tones consistent across a set.
Sessions and catalogues
Self contained job folders for commercial work or a full searchable archive for a library.
Process recipes
Export several versions at different sizes, formats and colour spaces in one command.

Changed in this version

  • Support added for recent camera bodies and lens correction profiles.
  • Faster browsing and thumbnail generation on very large catalogues.
  • Masking tools reworked with a better automatic subject selection.
  • Tethering reliability improved on long sessions with high frame counts.
  • Export queue handles large recipe sets with less memory use.

System requirements

Processor64 bit Intel or AMD, four cores or more recommended
Memory16 GB minimum, 32 GB for high resolution files
GraphicsGPU with 4 GB of dedicated memory and OpenCL support
Disk10 GB free plus fast storage for image caches
Display1920 by 1080 minimum, a calibrated display recommended

Install order

  1. Unpack the archive.
  2. Run the installer and allow the camera connection component to install.
  3. Launch once and set the cache location to a fast drive.
  4. Connect the camera afterwards so tethering detects it cleanly.

Worth knowing before you start

Catalogues from an earlier version are upgraded on first open, so keep a copy of the original.

A calibrated display is worth more here than in most applications given how the colour engine works.
