About this release
Vegas has always edited differently from everything else. Events sit on tracks that do not care whether the content is video, audio or a still, trimming and crossfading happen by dragging directly on the event rather than through a separate tool, and almost every operation has a key that makes the mouse optional. Editors who learned this way tend to be quicker in it than in anything they switch to.
The 2026 build keeps that and modernises what sits underneath. Playback is accelerated on the graphics card, the current camera formats decode natively, and proxies generate in the background for the material that still needs them. Nested timelines, adjustment events and track motion cover the compositing that a straightforward edit needs without leaving for a dedicated application.
Audio is unusually strong for an editor of this type, which is a legacy of where the program came from. Per track effect chains, real time processing, bus routing and a proper mixing window mean that a dialogue heavy cut can be balanced and treated on the timeline rather than exported for someone else to fix.
Colour work runs through scopes, curves and colour wheels docked beside the preview, with high dynamic range and log handling for material shot flat. Effects and transitions come from a large bundled set plus whatever OpenFX plug ins are installed, and rendering hands off to hardware encoders for the common delivery formats.
What it does
- Event based timeline
- Trim, fade and crossfade directly on the event with the mouse or entirely by keyboard.
- Accelerated playback
- Graphics card decoding and rendering keep modern camera formats moving without a transcode step.
- Nested timelines
- Sequences drop into other sequences as events, so structure stays manageable on long projects.
- Real time audio chains
- Per track and per bus effects with a full mixing window and proper routing.
- Colour with scopes
- Wheels, curves and scopes with log and high dynamic range handling for flat footage.
- OpenFX support
- Third party plug in sets install and appear alongside the bundled effects.
Changed in this version
- Rewritten decoder for high efficiency camera formats with much smoother scrubbing.
- Background proxy generation added to the media import path.
- Colour grading panel reorganised with a clearer node order.
- Faster project load on timelines with heavy event counts.
- Additional hardware encoder targets for delivery rendering.
