About this release
Mocha tracks surfaces rather than points, and that single difference is why it handles shots that defeat everything else. A wall, a phone screen, a sign or a cheek is a plane, and the tracker solves its position, rotation, scale, shear and perspective across the whole shot even when the surface is partly hidden, badly lit or has no distinct feature to lock onto.
Everything else in the program builds on that track. Roto shapes inherit it so a mask follows a moving subject with a fraction of the keyframes, the remove module paints out rigs, markers, signs and unwanted objects using surrounding frames rather than a clone brush, the stabilise module locks a shot or a region, and insert places a replacement screen or graphic with correct perspective and motion blur.
It ships both as a standalone application and as a plug in for the common hosts, which matters in practice. The plug in keeps the work inside the project so shapes and tracks stay live, while the standalone handles a long shot as its own job and exports tracking data, shapes and mattes in the formats that every other application in the pipeline reads.
The extras cover the work around the work. Lens distortion is solved and reapplied so an insert sits correctly on a wide angle plate, three dimensional camera solving derives a camera from tracked planes, mattes export with edge control for a compositor downstream, and shapes convert between the shape formats other applications use so nothing is redrawn twice.
What it does
- Planar tracking
- Solves position, rotation, scale, shear and perspective of a surface even when it is partly hidden.
- Roto with tracked shapes
- Masks inherit the track so a moving subject is rotoed with far fewer keyframes.
- Object removal
- Paints out rigs, markers and unwanted objects using surrounding frames instead of a clone brush.
- Stabilise and insert
- Lock a shot or a region, or place a replacement screen with correct perspective and motion blur.
- Lens distortion workflow
- Solve distortion from the plate, work undistorted and reapply it on output.
- Standalone and plug in
- Runs as its own application or inside the common hosts, with data export in the formats the pipeline reads.
Changed in this version
- Tracking engine updated with better behaviour on low contrast and heavily occluded surfaces.
- Removal module renders faster and blends more cleanly at shape edges.
- New matte export options with finer edge control.
- Interface reworked for high density displays.
- Improved shape interchange with the common compositing applications.
System requirements
| Processor | 64 bit Intel or AMD, six cores or more recommended |
|---|---|
| Memory | 16 GB minimum, 32 GB for high resolution plates |
| Graphics | GPU with 4 GB of dedicated memory |
| Disk | 2 GB for the install plus cache room |
| Display | 1920 by 1080 or higher |
Install order
- Close every host application before installing.
- Unpack the archive and run the installer.
- Choose the standalone application, the plug in hosts or both on the component screen.
- Launch the standalone once and set the cache folder to a fast drive.
Worth knowing before you start
Projects from the previous major version open with tracks and shapes intact.
The cache grows quickly on long high resolution shots, so point it somewhere with room.
