About this release
Lightroom 6 is the last standalone perpetual release, and for a lot of photographers that is precisely why it is still wanted. It installs once, runs from the local disk, keeps its catalogue in a file you own, and does not depend on anything outside the machine. On a laptop that travels or a studio machine that is deliberately kept off the network, that independence is the whole argument.
The structure is the familiar module row. Library for import, sorting, keywords, collections and flags. Develop for the whole raw pipeline, from exposure and tone curve through colour, lens correction, noise reduction and sharpening, with the local adjustment brush and gradients on top. Then Map, Book, Slideshow, Print and Web for output. Everything is non destructive, so the original file is never rewritten and every edit stays live.
It is noticeably lighter than the current generation. On older hardware, where a modern catalogue application crawls, this one stays responsive with a library of tens of thousands of images. Import, preview generation and browsing all move at a speed that suits a machine of that period rather than fighting it.
Panorama and high dynamic range merging happen inside the catalogue and produce raw files rather than flattened output, so the merged result carries the same editing latitude as the frames that went into it. Export presets handle resizing, output sharpening, watermarking and metadata in one configured pass, and plugin support covers the usual publishing and processing extensions.
