About this release

This image exists for machines that cannot move and never will: laboratory instruments whose control software was written for this generation and never ported, machine tools with interface cards that have no newer driver, test rigs, till systems and embedded controllers. Replacing the system means replacing the equipment, which is rarely an option.

The integral edition is an image with the whole service pack history and the later cumulative fixes already folded in, so setup produces a system that is at its final state rather than one needing hours of patching afterwards. Common driver families for storage and network hardware of that era are included, which is the difference between a working install and hunting for a network card driver on a machine with no network.

The multilingual pack means display language is chosen rather than fixed, which matters for equipment deployed across sites. Regional formats, keyboard layouts and the input method set follow from the choice, and the Professional feature set is intact including domain join, remote desktop and the policy editor that these deployments usually depend on.

Installation is the sequence this generation used: boot the media, accept the partition layout, let text mode setup copy, then let graphical setup finish. It installs to older controllers without the driver injection step that newer systems need, and it will run in a virtual machine for anyone keeping an instrument application alive without keeping the original hardware.
