About this release
There is a particular category of machine this image exists for: industrial controllers, laboratory instruments, till systems and workshop equipment whose driver package was written for this generation and never updated, and which will not work on anything newer. Replacing them is expensive and often not possible, so the system they were validated against stays in circulation long after the desktop world moved on.
The Professional edition is the right level for that work. Group policy, remote desktop hosting, drive encryption, domain join and the client hypervisor are all present, which is what separates it from the consumer edition and what most managed or instrument attached machines actually need. This is the final update revision of the generation, with the interface changes that brought the desktop and the start behaviour back to something familiar.
It is also genuinely light. On hardware from the period it runs comfortably in two gigabytes of memory, boots quickly even from a spinning disk, and does not carry the background service load that later generations added. On a machine doing one job all day, that lightness is a feature rather than a compromise.
The image is multilingual with the display language chosen during setup, and both 32 bit and 64 bit builds are present because a lot of the equipment this is installed against needs the 32 bit one for its drivers. Setup is the ordinary routine: write to a stick, boot, partition and install, with driver coverage broad enough for hardware of the period.
What it does
- Professional feature set
- Group policy, remote desktop hosting, drive encryption, domain join and the client hypervisor.
- Both architectures
- 32 bit and 64 bit builds in one download, since attached equipment often needs the 32 bit one.
- Light on resources
- Runs comfortably in two gigabytes of memory and boots quickly from a spinning disk.
- Final revision
- The last update release of this generation with the desktop and start behaviour restored.
- Multilingual image
- Display language, keyboard and regional format chosen during setup.
- Period driver coverage
- Storage and network drivers appropriate to the hardware this generation was built for.
Changed in this version
- Image refreshed with the final cumulative update set folded in.
- Updated storage drivers for controllers common on machines of the period.
- Setup corrected on machines with mixed drive types.
- Language selection screen simplified.
System requirements
| Processor | 1 GHz or faster with PAE, NX and SSE2 support |
|---|---|
| Memory | 1 GB for 32 bit, 2 GB for 64 bit |
| Disk | 20 GB for 64 bit, 16 GB for 32 bit |
| Firmware | UEFI or legacy BIOS, both supported |
| Media | 8 GB or larger USB stick for writing the image |
Install order
- Choose the architecture the attached hardware drivers require before writing anything.
- Write the image to a USB stick with a tool that handles bootable media.
- Back up anything on the target machine before starting.
- Boot from the stick, choose the display language and let setup run.
Worth knowing before you start
Check which architecture the equipment drivers need, since many of them are 32 bit only.
A clean install wipes the selected partition, so confirm the backup first.
