About this release

The current desktop generation asks a lot of a machine before it does anything useful, and on hardware that clears the requirements without much room to spare, most of that goes to services the person using it never asked for. This build removes them. What is left is the Professional desktop, the file explorer, networking, drivers and settings, running in a fraction of the memory the full image needs at idle.

The removals are the components that cost the most for the least return on a modest machine. Bundled applications, the widgets and feed surface, search indexing, telemetry and diagnostic reporting, background content delivery, the store framework and most of the animation and transparency work are stripped out of the image rather than switched off in settings, so they cannot come back on their own after an update.

The rest of the Professional feature set stays. Group policy, remote desktop hosting, drive encryption, domain join and the virtualisation platform all work, which is what makes this usable on a machine that has to join a network properly rather than being a standalone box. Ordinary desktop applications install normally on top of it.

Understand the tradeoffs before installing. Update coverage is reduced because the servicing components are trimmed, applications that expect the store framework will not install, and some system features that were removed cannot be added back without reinstalling from a full image. This is a build aimed at a machine that needs to be responsive more than it needs to be complete.

System requirements

Install order

1. Write the image to a USB stick with a tool that handles bootable media.
2. Back up anything on the target machine, since a clean install is the only supported route.
3. Boot from the stick and let setup run without interrupting it.
4. Install any drivers the image did not cover once the desktop is reached.
