About this release

This is the combined image for people who set up machines rather than tinker with them. The system underneath is the Professional edition of the previous Windows generation, and the document suite is integrated into the same media, so a single pass through setup leaves a machine that can open a spreadsheet the moment it reaches the desktop. For a workshop that rebuilds several machines a week, that saves the second install, the second reboot and the second round of configuration.

The Professional feature set is intact. Group policy editing, remote desktop hosting, drive encryption, domain join and the hypervisor platform are all present, which is what separates this from the consumer edition and why it remains the default choice for anything doing paid work. Nothing has been stripped to make room for the suite.

The suite side is the perpetual generation of the document applications rather than a subscription front end, so the word processor, spreadsheet, presentation tool, database, publishing tool and mail client are installed as ordinary desktop programs. They open the current file formats, keep the ribbon layout people already know, and do not sit waiting for an account before they will let you type.

The image is multilingual. Display language, keyboard layout and regional formats are chosen during setup rather than baked into the build, and further language packs can be added afterwards without going through the installation again. Driver coverage is broad enough that network and storage usually come up on the first boot.

System requirements

Install order

1. Write the image to a USB stick with any tool that handles bootable media.
2. Back up anything on the target machine before you begin.
3. Boot from the stick, choose the display language and let setup partition the drive.
4. Open the suite once after the first sign in so the component cache builds before real work starts.
