About this release

This is the same desktop system with everything optional taken out of it. On a machine with a mechanical drive, four gigabytes of memory and a processor from a decade ago, the difference between a full image and a trimmed one is the difference between a machine somebody will use and one they will give up on. Boot time drops, memory in use at idle drops, and the background activity that keeps an old drive busy for the first ten minutes after login largely goes away.

What comes out are the parts a working machine does not need: the bundled consumer applications, the store front end, the assistant, the telemetry and feedback services, the game recording layer, the tips and suggestion system and the preinstalled tiles. What stays is the Professional feature set that makes the machine useful, including group policy, remote desktop hosting, drive encryption and domain join, plus the full driver stack so hardware still works.

It is offered in a combined image so one download covers several starting points. Both architectures are present for machines that cannot run the sixty four bit build, and the trimming level can be chosen at setup so you can take a moderate reduction on a machine with some headroom or the full reduction on something genuinely old.

Update handling still works, which is the question everyone asks about a trimmed build. Security updates install as normal, and the components that were removed simply stay removed rather than reappearing after the first update pass. English is the base language with packs addable afterwards for anything else.

System requirements

Install order

1. Write the image to a USB stick with a tool that handles bootable media.
2. Back up the machine before starting, a clean install is the intended route here.
3. Choose the architecture and the trimming level during setup.
4. Add a language pack afterwards if English is not what the machine needs.
