About this release

The point of this image is a machine that a full desktop install has effectively retired. Two gigabytes of memory, a spinning disk, an old dual core processor: hardware that spends its whole boot thrashing and never becomes responsive. This build strips the desktop system down to what such a machine can actually run, and the difference between a full install and this one on that hardware is the difference between usable and not.

What comes out is the parts that eat resources without earning them on a small machine. The bundled application set, the search indexing service, the telemetry and reporting components, the background delivery services, the accessibility and gaming subsystems and most of the visual effects are all removed rather than disabled. What stays is the desktop, the file explorer, the networking stack, drivers, the settings surface and the ability to install ordinary applications.

Three variants are in the download. The superlite build is the most aggressive strip and the right choice on the weakest hardware. The compact build applies file compression on the system files as well, which reduces the installed footprint further and suits machines with a small solid state drive. The preinstallation environment variant boots as a repair and recovery environment rather than installing, which is useful for rescuing a machine before deciding what to do with it.

The tradeoffs are real and worth understanding before installing. Update coverage is reduced because the components that handle it are trimmed, some applications expecting a full system will refuse to install, and the store framework is absent. This is a build for a specific job on specific hardware, not a general replacement for a full install.

System requirements

Install order

1. Choose the variant that matches the machine before writing anything.
2. Write the image to a USB stick with a tool that handles bootable media.
3. Back up anything on the target machine, since a clean install is the only supported route.
4. Boot from the stick and let setup run, then install drivers the image did not cover.
