The High Cost of Touring: SODOM's Angelripper Shares His Struggles
In a recent interview, Thomas "Angelripper" Such, the legendary bassist and vocalist of SODOM, opened up about his decision to scale back the band's touring activities. With a career spanning decades, Angelripper finds himself at a crossroads, contemplating the future of his beloved band.
But here's where it gets controversial... Angelripper reveals the financial strain of touring, especially in the U.S., which has led to a reevaluation of his priorities. With a family to consider and a desire for a more balanced life, he questions the worth of extensive touring.
"It's a shame we haven't toured for our latest album, 'The Arsonist,'" he confesses. "But I'm 63 now, and my doctor advises me to slow down. I want to enjoy my time, spend it with my family, and pursue my passions like hunting."
And this is the part most people miss... The complex logistics and costs of touring internationally, particularly in the U.S., have become a significant hurdle for many artists. Angelripper highlights the extensive paperwork and expensive visa processes, questioning why American bands don't face the same challenges when touring Europe.
"It's a double standard," he says. "American artists can tour Europe freely, but for us, it's a bureaucratic nightmare."
So, is this a permanent retirement, or just a break? Angelripper leaves the door open, comparing his situation to that of SLAYER's Tom Araya. "I might do a few shows here and there, but I'm not committing to anything just yet."
In the meantime, Angelripper is enjoying his time off, spending quality time with his family and pursuing his hobbies. He emphasizes the importance of freedom and the ability to choose his own path, even if it means sacrificing some financial gains.
"I love my fans, but I also love myself and my family. It's time to prioritize and do what's best for me."
What do you think? Is Angelripper's decision a wise move, or is he risking his legacy? Share your thoughts in the comments!
