Imagine a future where charging your electric vehicle (EV) is as quick as a pit stop at a petrol station. Well, Nyobolt's EV technology is making this a reality!

In a recent demonstration, the Nyobolt EV went from 30% charge to an impressive 80% in just three minutes. This rapid charging capability is a game-changer, especially for those who've struggled with the slow charging times at motorway stations.

"Our charge and discharge performance are almost symmetrical, which is quite unique," explains Davies. This symmetry means the battery can handle both rapid charging and discharging efficiently, a feature that could revolutionize various industries.

One potential application is in mining, where trucks follow a predictable routine. Nyobolt's technology can handle the demands of these vehicles, offering a more sustainable and efficient solution. But that's not all; Nyobolt also has its sights set on the energy-intensive world of AI and data centers, providing a much-needed emissions-cutting solution for these 24/7 operations.

The first public contract for Nyobolt's technology is in robotics. Massachusetts-based Symbotic is utilizing Nyobolt batteries in their warehouse robots, resulting in a 40% weight reduction compared to ultracapacitors while increasing energy capacity sixfold. These robots now have a longer operational window and a cycle life ten times that of lithium-ion technology. The battery in this sleek sports car has been rigorously tested, enduring over 4000 fast-charge cycles, equivalent to 600,000 miles, and retaining over 80% of its capacity.

So, when can we expect to see this technology in our cars? Ramesh Narasimhan, Nyobolt's executive vice-president, predicts it could be as early as 2028 or 2029. "In four years, the fast-charging network will be transformed. Car manufacturers must consider the customer experience in this new scenario," he says.

A world with 10-minute charging times would significantly increase the throughput of public DC chargers, boosting revenues for charging station owners or allowing them to reduce costs. It would also reduce queues and inconvenience for drivers, making EV ownership even more appealing.

Eight undisclosed car manufacturers are in talks with Nyobolt about adopting their cell technology, which could be retrofitted to existing vehicles. Narasimhan believes this is a more viable option than solid-state batteries for customers concerned about range and charging anxiety. "The questions surrounding solid-state batteries are about timeframe and cost, and these have not been resolved yet. We believe our technology, given its competitive nature and the enhanced customer experience, is ideal for automotive applications that are here right now," he adds.

But will Nyobolt build their own car? Their proof of concept, a stunning sports car designed by Callum and based on a Lotus Exige V6 chassis, has certainly turned heads with its dramatic looks and lightweight design.

"I think the answer is yes, absolutely," says Shane Davies, an automotive expert with experience in the Mercedes SLS Electric Drive and AMG Project One. "This car is a one-off demonstration, but we wouldn't rule out producing a limited run. Many of us at Nyobolt have automotive backgrounds, so we understand the challenges of parts stock, dealers, and diagnostics. It's more likely we'd partner with an OEM who already has these infrastructures in place. A run of around 50 cars would make it viable."

The future of EV technology is exciting, and Nyobolt is at the forefront of this revolution. With their innovative battery technology, they're not just charging ahead; they're rewriting the rules of the game.
